Mailbag: What were your minicamp observations?

Mailbag-May-13-2024-hero

It doesn't sound like the players get to do a lot on the field for the rookie minicamp over the weekend. But were you able to gather any first-hand observations about the players, either on the field or in the locker room? – Ryan Adler / Conway, SC

Patrik: Indeed, because while there weren't any contact drills going on, there was still plenty to take note of. The headliner for me is in how Cooper Beebe verbally confirmed he'll be moved to center to begin his Cowboys' career, and then watching him take practice reps at the position — looking very comfortable in his pre-snap adjustments and snap technique to the QB. Tyler Guyton (a massive human being, by the way) also looks comfortable in his move to left tackle, and while it's early still, his work ethic is elite. Marist Liufau has been a sponge and Marshawn Kneeland is as well, the latter also being more physically imposing than film would imply. All in all, be it the drafted or the undrafted (e.g., Ryan Flournoy going extra indy work on the Jugs machine after practice), I saw a class of rookies hellbent on being more than just a footnote in 2024.

Nick Harris: Mike McCarthy called the rookie group that came in for minicamp this past weekend one of the most impressive groups he's had the opportunity to bring in during his career from their approach off the field to their intention and attention to detail on the field. It starts up top with Tyler Guyton who was moved into Dallas within two days of being drafted to get a head start on going through his offseason development. That mentality is spread throughout the group, including a UDFA group that has a handful of guys hungry to prove they were worth using a draft selection on. On the field, there wasn't a ton to take away other than getting an up-close look at body types. As expected, large bodies and athletic, lengthy frames dominate the narrative.
