Past/Present: Mike McCarthy headed back to Pittsburgh as Steelers head coach

01_24_ Past Present

MIke McCarthy is returning home. The Pittsburgh native and former Cowboys and Packers head coach is now returning to the Steel City as the next head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

McCarthy, who has been out of football in 2024 after parting ways with the Cowboys after five years, will become just the fourth head coach of the Steelers since 1969. In that span, Pittsburgh had Chuck Knoll for 23 years, followed by Bill Cowher for 15 and then Mike Tomlin for the last 19 seasons.

McCarthy had a 49-35 record, highlighted by three straight 12-5 seasons from 2021-23. Before that, he was 174-112-2 as the Packers head coach. Ironically enough, he won Super Bowl XLV with the Packers, over the Steelers and at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Now, he returns to Pittsburgh, where he was born and raised.
